Primal Roots at The White Cliffs – Live on The Edge

Primal Roots at The White Cliffs – Live on The Edge

The White Cliffs has teamed-up with social enterprise trailblazers Primal Roots to deliver retreats in White Cliffs country, using outdoors fitness to empower participants with a sense of joy and wonder at the force of nature. As a social enterprise working with people in recovery from addiction and homelessness, you’re also sure to leave Primal Roots at The White Cliffs with a positive outlook on the future of community and a feeling of pride at having played your part. Maybe even a spark of inspiration to start something new where you live.

These unique retreats are as suited to friends and family groups as they are to teams and companies, being rooted in physical, mental and nutritional balance. But most of all, adventure!

“We welcome all who want to push themselves to be the best they can be. Not only do our retreats provide the benefit of improved health and wellbeing, they also serve to boost our collective sense of community because part of the experience is led by people who’ve turned their lives around, (from addiction and/or homelessness, for example) through outdoor fitness.” Says Primal Roots co-founder, Carl Adams. “Now they’re leaders in their own right absolutely set on inspiring as many people as they can. There’s no way you can leave here without inspiration.”

Overnight retreats include accommodation in double bedrooms, healthy breakfast and evening meals and sessions led by Primal Roots instructors. From £150 per person.

Sample Itinerary – One Night Trail Running Retreat

Day One

Check in at The White Cliffs, put on trail shoes, pack head torches (in winter months) and follow the path to the lighthouse to find the tracks along the rolling cliffs for breath-taking views across the Channel. We’ll then take the path along the cliff edge (not too close!) with hill climbs and steep descents and zig-zag down to Dead Man’s Bay and climb down to the beach for an invigorating dip (tide, daylight and weather permitting), then it’s back to the retreat to freshen up before a nutritious dinner and a good night’s sleep.

Day Two

Early in the morning we take a warm-up run to the beach for a sunrise meditation then icy dip in St. Margaret’s Bay; with the backdrop of the White Cliffs it makes for an unforgettable experience. Then it’s a looping run up and over the cliffs towards Kingsdown and back to the hotel for breakfast.

After breakfast, a body care workshop to help you maintain a functional, mobile and strong body. Pick up some amazing techniques that integrate the brain body connection. Then it’s either a short drive over to Walmer for a run around the Castle gardens or a run up over the cliffs via Kingsdown along the seafront path to Deal to find the place where Caesar’s Roman Army invaded!

There’s an opportunity to explore the vibrant town of Deal with its chic cafés, markets, galleries and shops before heading back to the hotel by taxi or bus.

‘I’ll admit that I was a little apprehensive about going on a ‘running retreat’ in the middle of October, with the threat of a sea swim thrown into the mix, but I needn’t have worried! Gavin kicked things off with a blustery and exhilarating dusk run to the light house and looped us back along the cliff path for a magnificent sunset and the excitement of some secret tunnels.  On our return we were given time to soak in a hot bath before sitting down to a delicious and very jovial dinner, and finally heading off to our comfortable beds.

“Saturday morning kicked off with a short jog to St Margaret’s Bay and a refreshing dip in the sea for some of us or a rare lie in for others, followed by a lazy and excellent breakfast. Then we headed out on the trails again for a gentle run down to Deal.  The views were spectacular, the wildlife varied and a joy to see and whole experience was thoroughly uplifting.  It felt like my usual stress levels were being rebalanced with any unnecessary mental load being literally blown out to sea. I would thoroughly recommend Primal Retreats at The White Cliffs, rest assured that Gavin is an excellent host and guide and he knows the best places for coffee and cake too!’ Says Jessica Brogan, a busy working mother and Company Director living near Ashford, Kent.
